Take Charge of Your Career: Discover Your Strengths
Unsure where to go next with your career? Discover your strengths and preferred behaviors so that you can make career choices that match your skills (or be more successful in your current position).
You will learn to:
- Identify your personal strengths through analysis
- Apply your personal strengths in your career
- Evaluate your individual patterns of behavior through assessment and match them to distinct career paths
- Describe the importance of a good fit between career areas and temperament
- Explore career possibilities you may not have considered and evaluate them against your strengths and behaviors
- Determine the gap (if any) between your current career and your long term goals
- Recognize ways to network properly that can lead to new job experiences
- Find alternative ways to develop experience in new job areas so you can realize the goals of your career plan
You will benefit by:
- Knowing your strengths and behaviors and how they apply to your career decisions
- Making a voyage of self exploration to determine which career path is right for you
- Gaining a clearer sense of direction about your career
- Having a written plan mapping out where you would like to go with your career, based on personal findings
- Gaining a clearer sense of direction about your career
- Becoming aware of the actions you need to take as a head-start in pursuing your plan
NOTE: This class is split into two components. The first half of the class will take place online, over a two week period. The second half of the class will take place in the classroom with an instructor. Online, you will complete two different tools and have a chance to discuss them with an instructor and the other students.
You will complete:
- Career Maze — an evaluation to help you identify your behavior patterns and the types of jobs they are compatible with
- The Work Importance Locator — a tool to assist you in prioritizing the aspects of your career that are important to you
Audience:
Anyone who would like to understand their strengths and apply them to their career path
Program Note:
Due to high demand, a shortcode will be required at registration to cover the $50 cancellation fee. If the participant attends the class, or cancels at least two weeks prior to the online portion, no fee will be assessed. You may arrange for someone to substitute for you with no cancellation penalty.

The Art of Making a Successful Career Transition
A transition point comes whenever you feel that you have hit a crossroads in your life/career. This course covers the challenges and opportunities of transition and offers an array of strategies so you can no only weather a career transition but also come out stronger for it.
You will learn to:
- Recognize the normal stages of any significant life transition
- Identify your transition "hot spots" and how to deal with them
- Apply change management techniques so you can lean into change rather than resist it
- Use strategies that will allow you to get off to a great start with a new supervisor
- Reframe any unhelpful beliefs about career transitions to create a positive outlook
- Use techniques to assess how the transition is working for you
You will benefit by:
- Having a greater understanding of overall life transitions
- Seeing your situation from other viewpoints
- Recognizing the various stages of transition and ways to navigate them
- Knowing how to show your value without bragging
- Adopting a positive mindset for your transition
- Making connections to other people in similar circumstances

Anyone going through a life/career transition, including those who plan to change jobs at U-M or who have recently done so

Building Your Leadership Brand
Your identity or brand helps communicate your value and what you stand for as a leader. Knowing this helps you make smart decisions about the work you want to engage in, identify opportunities where you need to stretch and grow, and let others know what you can contribute. In this course, based on the latest concepts by experts, you'll actively work to translate your core strengths and talents into a tangible personal brand.
You will learn to:
- Discuss the strategic and practical use of developing a personal leadership brand
- Use the results from your peer feedback and StrengthsFinder assessmens to identify talents and strengths
- Translate your feedback and assessment results into a compelling personal brand
- Use your personal brand to evaluate if you are on track and in alignment with professional and personal goals and results you want to achieve
- Integrate your leadership brand into your resume, social networking sites and other communications to promote your unique talents and abilities
You will benefit by:
- Becoming more intentional and strategic in developing your leadership identity and capability
- Receiving feedback from others that builds on or validates your unique talents and contributions to establish your leadership identity
- Leveraging and incorporating the self-knowledge gained from other 360° assessments or personality tools such as the MBTI®, True Colors
- Learning a simple 5-step process that can easily be repeated to evolve your leadership brand over time
Audience:
Anyone in a leadership role who would like to increase self-awareness of their unique talents and use the information better lead others and make informed career decisions
Program Note: As required class preparation, participants will gather peer feedback and complete the StrengthsFinder® 2.0 assessment to actively work with during the session. Participants will also be required to complete and share their personal leadership brand.
